Hoosier State Woman Killed When Showing Up at Incorrect Home Address for Cleaning Duties

Authorities in Indiana are weighing whether to file charges against a resident who allegedly fatally shot a female when she accidentally arrived to the incorrect address where she believed assigned to clean a home.

Police discovered Maria Florinda Rios Perez De Velasquez, aged 32, deceased just before 7am at the entrance of a home in a suburban town, a community of approximately 10,000 residents outside Indianapolis.

She belonged to a cleaning crew that had arrived at the incorrect house, according to police in an official release.

Officials did not publicly named the shooter, but investigators turned over the results from the investigation to the Boone County prosecutor, the county prosecutor, on Friday afternoon.

This case will highlight Indiana’s self-defense statutes, which permit residents to use lethal force to stop what they reasonably believe is an illegal entry into their dwelling.

But the killing has stunned the community. Rios Perez’s husband, Mauricio Velazquez, stated to local media that he was standing with her at the front door but was unaware she had been shot until she fell into his arms, injured. On a fundraising page, her brother mentioned that Rios Perez was a mother of four.

A majority of US states have similar laws like Indiana’s on the books, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

In similar cases in other states, authorities have filed criminal charges against individuals who opened fire outside their homes, including a admission of guilt by an elderly man who fired at a Black teenager after the youth came to his door by mistake. In New York, a man was convicted of second-degree murder for killing a woman inside a car who entered his driveway in error.

The incident underscores ongoing debates surrounding stand-your-ground statutes and their application in real-life scenarios.
